The island of Sifnos Archaeological Museum
One of the best sightseeing opportunities found on Sifnos Island will be the Archaeological Museum, in the medieval settlement of Castro (meaning castle or fortress). It opened as a museum during 1986, some years after getting renovated by the Ministry of Culture during the early 1980s.
The museum showcases artifacts originating from the Archaic to Roman time periods, ceramics coming from the Castle, and coins. The most significant exhibits you will find will be the Palmette Finial, a marble funerary stone going back to fourth century BC, a sculpture representing a female head (likewise created from marble) from the 4th century BC, a head of marble kouros, coming from the sixth century BC, a marble ionic capital (likewise dating from the sixth century BC), plus a marble funerary stele dating from the Hellenistic time.
Through the wintertime, the Sifnos Archaeological Museum is open from Tuesday to Friday, weekends and holidays from eight in the morning until two thirty in the afternoon. Between the 1st of July and 31st of August the museum is open from eight in the morning until three in the afternoon. The museum will be closed on Mondays all through the year. Entrance is free of charge.
